Loretta Oliver
Loretta started her
telecommuting job search venture
approximately 7 years ago while she was
working for an onsite telemarketing company.
Although the job helped pay the bills, it
turned out to be a negative experience for
her. She felt that some of the companies’
policies went against her own personal
values, so she decided to find another job.
She was a member of a work at home website
community at the time, so she made the
ultimate plunge to look for telecommuting
work so she could quit her onsite
telemarketing job. The website community
that she joined helped her network with
other work at home moms that were in the
same situation as she was. It helped spur
some creative ideas to brew in her head as
to where she wanted her telecommuting career
to go.
Loretta says that the telecommuting job
market was practically booming at the time
she started to look for work at home jobs.
She found many customer service type
positions from several small businesses that
were looking to save a little money by
hiring work at home employees. Over the
years, though, the telecommuting job market
seems to have wavered a little due to some
of the companies looking to hire offshore.
Loretta isn’t afraid to admit that she did
once fall for what appeared to be a scam
during her telecommuting job search. She
didn’t have a pleasant experience with the
company, but she is thankful for the chance
to connect with some other people in the
same situation and value the friendships
that have grown from this unpleasant
opportunity.
She considers these contacts and other
people she has met through online
communities, a major asset to her work from
home job search. She feels they have helped
her tremendously as she searched for as much
information as possible to find
telecommuting work. They have not only been
a huge resource for her, but they have also
been her line of support as she became
friends with many other community members.
She has done many types of jobs while
working from home. She tried her hand at
customer service call center jobs, but it
didn’t work out for her as she had children
at her home 24/7. She went on to try other
positions like Document Coding,
Transcription, Virtual Assistance, Chat Host
and dabbled at singles texting for one
company.
The advice Loretta gives for others are to,
“stick it out and think positive. There is
work to be had, and once you find the right
fit for you all the pieces will fall into
place. Talk to other wahm’s, they may be not
always have a job to offer you but they can
help you keep an eye out and point you in
the right direction when you need help. It’s
the best way to avoid scams, and over the
years I’ve met so many friends.”
