Be an Online Tutor

Learn How to Be An Online Tutor

Online tutoring is where people offer homework help to others in various types of subjects by using the internet. School teachers rarely have enough time to offer the one on one help the children need in order for them to succeed in their school subjects. This is why tutoring was developed, so that the children had a more focused teaching session. Online tutoring has allowed tutors to perform their sessions from anywhere in the world, using their computer.

This can be a pretty flexible job as the tutoring sessions are scheduled throughout the day. Some may be in the morning, while children are in school and others are in the afternoons and evenings when the kids are at home.

Where to find Online Tutoring Work:

There are many websites out there that are devoted to helping children with their homework. They are often hiring tutors to work for them as a lot of school systems are starting to sign up children all the time for one to one sessions. These jobs are almost always seen on the online job boards.

Another way to find the online tutoring jobs is simply doing a search on the internet for online tutoring. Most of the websites that you’ll find in your search will be of the tutoring programs that the kids will be signed up for, but there’s usually a section for careers that will explain how you could become an online tutor with their company.

Skills you need:

While some websites require you to have a teaching degree of sorts, it’s not always necessary to have. Some only ask for a Bachelor’s degree, while others may hire if you have experience in tutoring, so you will have to check out each site’s tutor requirements to see if you qualify.

Otherwise, you should be able to work well with others, be on time for your tutoring sessions and know the subject you’re tutoring well. You should also be a good listener and have patience with children who may not get the subject right away.

You will also need to have the ability to sit at your computer for an entire tutoring session without being interrupted. These sessions are very interactive; allowing the child and tutor to chat messages back and forth. It’s very important that you are there to see and respond to their messages. You will not be able to walk away from a session while you’re working.

Tools you need:

Online tutoring requires you to have a computer with a good, reliable internet connection. There should be enough memory space on the computer to allow for special software to be downloaded as most of the online tutoring companies use an internet based “chalkboard” to help the tutor and child connect. The chalkboard allows the tutor to see the child’s written work, so they can offer advice and be able to show them what steps they performed right or wrong. Each site will explain what they require you to have.

How much money can you make?

Of course, each site will pay differently, but generally a tutoring session is usually $10 per one hour session. They offer different rates for sessions that are less than an hour and even different rates if the child doesn’t show up for a session, but you do.

For those with teaching degrees, you can make a higher amount of up to $20 per one hour session. Each site will have different rates, so be sure to check them out before making the decision on who you will be working for.
