Pros and cons of freelance projects
Starting a freelancing career can be the step in the right direction you need or it could be a mistake for your career. It all depends on your situation and how much work you put into getting a freelancing career off the ground. Before making that decision for yourself, you will want to weigh both the pros and cons of freelancing to figure out what’s best for your situation.
Pros of freelance projects
Receive more income- For a writer working
for a company as an employee; they may make
$10-$15 an hour; but as a freelancer a
writer could charge $40-$50 an article. If
they are good, a company/client needing
writing work may be willing to pay that
amount for their services. A writer working
as an employee would have to work
approximately 4-5 hours to make the same
amount as a freelancer does with just one
article.
Can spread your services out- As a
freelancer, you would be able to work for
more than one client or company. As an
employee, most of your time will be spent
with that one company alone, which pretty
much puts a cap on how much income you bring
home.
More Control- Employees are limited on how
creative they can get on their assigned
projects. Freelancers are hired for their
expertise in the needed area, which gives
them a little more flexibility to complete
the assigned tasks. Using the clients input
on how the outcome should look, a freelancer
can create the completed project as they
feel necessary.
Cons of freelance projects
Hired by project- Freelancers are hired on a
per project basis. When the project is
completed and they are paid for their work,
then they have to find more projects to work
on to keep their income stream coming in.
Employees are hired on an ongoing basis.
Even though the employee can make less money
than a freelancer, they still benefit from
the ongoing income.
Finding Clients- Freelancers can go through
some tough times trying to find clients to
provide their services to. They can go
through work spurts where the offers are
pouring in and they can also experience dry
spurts where it’s difficult finding work.
Employees are pretty much guaranteed the
work as they are already hired to work for a
company.
Provide your own equipment- Employees
working for companies are usually provided
with the necessary equipment to do their
jobs. Freelancers need to have their own to
complete the work they’re hired for. This
can get costly depending on the type of
service the freelancer offers.
If your situation enables you to start a
freelancing career, be aware that you will
need to become aggressive to gain clients in
order for it to be successful. The more
knowledge, skills and experience you gain,
the more likely clients will want to hire
you for their upcoming projects.
